Description
In 1850 New York, Dimples Appleby, who leads a band of children street singers, lives with her grandfather, Prof. Eustace Appleby, an actor down on his luck, who resorts to petty theft, rumors of which Dimples refuses to believe. They perform at the Drew estate, from which the professor steals a clock. Dimples returns the clock and overhears that Mrs. Drew's beloved nephew, Allen, is leaving her house because she does not approve of his love for an actress, Cleo Marsh. Allen tries to stage a version of Uncle Tom's cabin and casts Dimples and hires the professor as his assistant. The professor loses Allen's money to conmen. He persuades Mrs. Drew to purchase a watch, which he claims belonged to Napoleon, and this money allows the play to go on. She learns that he has conned her and brings the police to the theater. She is moved by Dimples performance as Eva and tells the police to let the professor go. A year later, Allen announces the first presentation in New York of a minstrel show with Dimples as the star.
